Speaks out

Sunday, July 7, 1996

"I think that there should be some way to make sure that there
is working-class representation at the government level … Even
someone who is really liberal, like Bill Clinton, is essentially an
aristocrat, and lobbying doesn’t just quite cut it."

Quynh Nguyen is a history/Asian American studies student.

"Colin Powell … He’s been leading armies for a while, and you
know how efficient they are, so let’s put him governing
America."

Karen Ayotte is a visiting medical student from Washington
D.C.

"Somebody that is not in politics. Bureaucrats … are just more
interested in their own agendas, not … in the agendas of the
common people. A non-politician would be perfect."

Cristina Torrez is a third-year English student.

"The most qualified person who least wants to govern. Anybody
who wants to lead in today’s system, to get to the point where you
could be a good leader, you have to compromise yourself."

Mario Tamurri is a postdoctoral biology student.

"Actually the way most of the countries in Europe have it, I
like it … That’s a sort of a system where if you have the most
votes you govern the country, but that means it’s not a
presidential system."

Marcus Klimmer attended UCLA in 1988.
