  UCLA Performing Arts Arlo Guthrie, son
of folk singer Woody Guthrie, will peform with various family
members at Royce Hall Friday at 8 p.m. Sugar Cult plays at
Westwood Plaza

Sugar Cult will play at Westwood Plaza on Wednesday, Nov. 1, at
12 p.m.

A power-pop-rock band hailing from Santa Barbara, Sugar Cult is
known for its songs, infectious tunes and enthusiastic
performances. MTV recently picked Sugar Cult as one of the most
promising unsigned bands in America, offering the band a chance to
perform at the MTV Beach House in San Diego.

Sugar Cult includes Tim Pagnotta on vocals and guitar, Ben Davis
on vocals and drums, Airin on vocals and bass and Marko 72 on
guitar.

Arlo Guthrie at Royce Hall

Folk singer Arlo Guthrie, son of famed folk singer Woody
Guthrie, will perform at Royce Hall on Friday, Nov. 3, at 8
p.m.

Guthrie refined his unique voice and style playing in Greenwich
Village clubs during the 1960s. His 1967 release
“Alice’s Restaurant” was a major hit, helping to
encourage a new national interest in social activism. The song
served as the inspiration for the 1969 film of the same name,
starring Guthrie.

Guthrie will perform both old favorites and more recent works.

Halloween concert by UCLA Orchestra

The UCLA Philharmonia will perform a special Halloween concert
at the Jan Popper Theater, Schoenberg Hall at 8 p.m. The show
features conductor Jon Robertson and piano soloist Walter
Ponce.

The evening’s selection includes Brahms’
“Academic Festival Overture,” Beethoven’s
“Symphony No. 7,” and Paul Reale’s
“Caldera” for piano and orchestra with Walter Ponce,
soloist. Reale and Ponce are both faculty in the UCLA Music
Department.

In a Halloween-themed pre-concert lecture, Reale will perform
selections from his “Satanic Mass” for solo piano. He
will also speak on the relationship between musical works and the
fabulous powers of the imagination.

General admission to the concert is $7, $3 for seniors and
students with ID. Admission to the lecture is free. For more

Misia performs at Royce Hall

Celebrated Fadoist singer Misia will make her UCLA premiere at
Royce Hall, Thursday, Nov. 2, at 8 p.m.

Misia combines the sultry charms of a 1920s screen vamp with the
natural elegance of gypsy tradition to create her bohemian persona.
An accomplished diva in her native country Portugal, she is known
for her soul-stirring renditions of modern Fado music, the
Portuguese equivalent of American blues.

Misia integrates the words of contemporary poets into her lyrics
and is well known for combining the inspiring beat of urban rhythms
with the earthy soul of Fado tradition.
