UCLA students have a wide variety of restaurants to choose from
on campus ““ from the Japanese style cuisine of Tsunami, to
the gourmet sandwiches of the Bagel Deli, to the suculant rice
bowls of the Pacific Rice and Noodle Traders. Â ED RHEE
Tsunami A-level Ackerman Entree price range: $3.99-$7.69
Mon.-Thurs. open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Fri. 10 a.m.-5 p.m., closed
Sat. and Sun. Diners searching for variety will find it at
Tsunami. The eatery offers sushi made fresh everyday from
California rolls to shrimp, spicy tuna, vegetable, and eel rolls.
It also has hot noodle bowls along with traditional Japanese dishes
such as udon and soba noodles. The California rolls are a light and
healthy choice with fresh avocado and crisp cucumbers. The spicy
tuna rolls are also delicious, with a tang of wasabi that is not
too strong. Although the eel rolls are tasty, the flavor comes more
from the sauce than from the small portion of eel. Since eel is a
delicacy, the rolls contain more sauce and avocado so the meat
cannot be properly savored. If patrons are craving something more
hearty and suitable for the changing fall weather, the noodle bowls
are an alternative. They are relatively inexpensive, with the
vegetable noodle bowl costing $3.95, yet filling. The vegetable
noodle bowl might satisfy diners’ hunger, but not necessarily
satiate their taste buds. The separate ingredients, like the
asparagus, noodles, and mushrooms, are appetizing, but the meal
itself lacks full flavor. Advantages include boba drinks, sushi
packaged for people on the go, and a small, convenient seating area
for the restaurants’ customers who do care to linger. Tsunami
trys to cater to all, but its sushi lovers will leave more
satisfied.
 ED RHEE
Pacific Rice & Noodle Traders Entree price range:
$3.19-$4.19 Lu Valle Commons Mon.-Thurs. open 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.,
Fri. 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sat. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., closed
Sun. An Asian theme dominates the dishes at this
restaurant. There are choices from chicken or tofu, served with
steamed vegetables, to go along with a bowl of udon noodles or
steamed rice, or a dish of chinese or ceasar salad. It also offers
a selection of three different sauces which usually change
everyday. Among some flavors are teriyaki, pineapple, kung pao, and
schezwuan. The chicken and rice bowl with sauce is the most
appetizing choice. The chicken is tender and well-marinated in
teriyaki sauce beforehand. Then it is placed in a bowl of steaming
rice with additional teriyaki sauce that can be added. The chicken
over the chinese salad is also a delicious choice, but not as
filling as the rice and bowl option. The vegetable and tofu bowl,
although tasty, is not recommended. The portion of tofu and
vegetables never amounts to the portion of rice, and the sauce
always runs out in the end, leaving bland rice. A recommendation is
to ask for more than the typical one or two spoonfuls of sauce the
servers offer. The extra flavor will make the meal more
enjoyable.
