“Unseen Cinema: Early American Avant Garde Film from 1893
““ 1941″ begins tonight at the James Bridges Theater in
Melnitz Hall. The series concentrates on short films and the
classic avant garde cinema of the early 20th century. Tickets are
available at the theater one hour before showtime. Admission is $7
general and $5 for students, seniors, and UCLA Alumni Association

Tonight at 7 and 9:30 p.m., “Riding in Cars With
Boys” starring Drew Barrymore, Steve Zahn and Adam Garcia,
will be shown in the Ackerman Grand Ballroom. The story deals with
a single mother and her aspirations for her son, whom she desires
to be a writer. Tickets are $2 at the door.
Music
Tonight Teddy Pendergrass will play at the Wiltern Theater.

The theater event “How We First Met” is a romantic
comedy in which real life couples were interviewed and their
stories turned into improvised scenes. The show will play at 8 p.m.

Literature
On view now through March 21 in the lobby of the UCLA Charles E.
Young Research Library is “Blacklist in the Golden
State.” The blacklisting of members of the motion picture
community was an integral part of the anti-Communist fervor that
swept the United States in the immediate aftermath of World War
II.
Nora Hamilton and Norma Stoltz Chinchilla will read and discuss
“Seeking Community in a Global City: Guatemalans and
Salvadorans in Los Angeles,” Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Midnight
Special Bookstore and Cultural Center on 3rd Street in Santa
Monica. The book involves two decades of collaborative research in
which the authors conducted extensive interviews and recorded
narrative accounts of Central Americans in L.A.
