Greco earns Pac-10 honors
UCLA’s Michelle Greco was named Pac-10 Women’s
Basketball Player of the Week after the Bruins snapped a three-game
losing streak to crosstown rival USC on Sunday at Pauley
Greco played all 40 minutes against the Trojans, tallying 28
points and converting all 12 of her attempts from the foul line.
She scored the Bruins’ final eight points of the game
including a crucial three-point play that extended UCLA’s
lead to four with 1:41 to play and quelled a late USC flurry.
The Bruins (10-4, 5-0 Pac-10) are in first place in the
conference heading into this week’s road games against
Arizona State and No. 22 Arizona.
An All-Pac-10 performer in 2001, Greco missed all of last season
due to recurring concussions, but she has rebounded nicely this
year. She leads the league in scoring (19.8 ppg) and steals (2.86),
and ranks fifth in the conference in free throw percentage
(.812).
Greco is the first Bruin to be named player of the week since
the 1999-2000 season.
Women’s tennis No. 7 in ITA poll
The UCLA women’s tennis team checked in at the No. 7 spot
when the Intercollegiate Tennis Association released its preseason
top 25 yesterday.
The Bruins are one of six Pac-10 teams to appear in the poll
including No. 1 Stanford, the defending national champion.
Football gets verbal commitment
Aaron Whittington, a 6-foot-4, 210-pound defensive end prospect
from St. Louis, has verbally committed to UCLA. He did so after
taking an official visit to campus over the weekend.
Whittington chose UCLA over such schools as Illinois, Indiana
and Nebraska.
UCLA has received a total of 10 verbal commitments this
year.
