Student's corner

The Daily Bruin asked students if they had seen any musical
performances this year that changed their opinion of a genre or
group? Elaine Guzman

Second year, English

“I went to the Indian culture show. As a minority, I
realized how similar the cultural transitions students have to make
at UCLA are. We’re not as different as we think we
are.” Joey Capello

Fourth-year, ethnomusicology

“(Led Zepagain) changed my idea of pop-group cover bands.
I used to think cover bands were an unoriginal art form, but it
showed these people do care about their music more than most
Zeppelin fans do.” Lourdes Pereyra

Fourth-year, sociology

“I saw Music of Bali. … They used 150-year-old
instruments, so you think about the diversity of all the
generations that have played the instruments, and it makes you
think about how much we can learn about culture and society.”
Fourth-year, ethnomusicology “I saw the Middle Eastern
ensemble performance. I’ve never seen a live Middle Eastern
orchestra play together. I’ve listened to recordings, but
seeing them play in person is a different experience.”
Tiffany Dean

Second-year, biology

“I play in the symphonic band, and honestly, I think I see
the dedication that it takes people to work on music, and I value
it so much more now.” Mary Lee Behar

Second-year, French and psychology

“I went to see my friend perform in a Bali performance. I
thought Bali was in India until I went to see it. The music was all
dreamy and tropical. It was a good learning experience.”
