Council approves agenda
The Undergraduate Students Association Council passed the
University of California Student Association Action agenda for
2003-2004 with a 11-0-0 vote at their general meeting Tuesday
night.
UCSA is an advocacy group consisting of students and student
governments from all 10 UC campuses.
On the agenda for UCSA is to stop student fee increases, after
this year’s 30 percent fee hike.
Also on the agenda is a campaign to promote university funding
for student outreach programs.
USAC also approved the United States Students Association Action
agenda for 2003-2004. The resolution was passed with a 11-0-0
vote.
USSA is a national lobbying organization that aims to advocate
on behalf of students.
Currently on USSA’s agenda is increasing legislation
regarding immigrants’ civil rights.
Also on the agenda is a campaign to change the Higher Education
Act Reauthorization, which authorizes student assistance programs
such as financial aid, and services to help students achieve
post-secondary education.
UCSA budget passed
Council unanimously passed the UCSA budget for 2003-2004 with
little discussion. The board plans to have a surplus of close to
$3,000 at the end of the year.
This year’s budget passed with relative ease compared to
the controversy of this past year over newly instated stipends and
a budget that was to run on a deficit of $17,000.
One of the recipients of the stipends, former USAC Vice
President Chris Neal later resigned from his vice chairman
position, and the budget was revised to run on a smaller
deficit.
Open house a success
USAC’s annual open house, held Wednesday night, attracted
close to 100 students ““ a dramatic improvement from past
years.
After the officers introduced their positions to the attendees,
they proceeded to take smaller groups on a tour of the third and
fourth floors of Kerckhoff Hall ““ home to all the USAC
offices.
Many students expressed interest in the presidential internship
program, which would introduce students to the work and history of
USAC.
“We had a very good response,” External Vice
President Matt Kaczmarek said.
