Calendar: Film & TV

“Mona Lisa Smile”
AMC AVCO Cinema
Dec. 4, 7:30 p.m.

UCLA students have a chance to catch the female version of
“Dead Poet’s Society” before it’s released
with this special sneek preview. Producer Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas
will be present and available for a Q&A afterward, so you can
ask her how she assembled the stellar cast that appears in the
film. Pick up free passes in 319 Kerckhoff.

Leslie Cheung Film Festival
Regent Showcase Theater
Dec. 6-7

One of Hong Kong’s most beloved film stars, Leslie Cheung
died in April, before his latest movie, “Inner Senses,”
could be released in Los Angeles. Here he gets the treatment he
deserves, with a two-day retrospective festival of some of his
films, highlighted by a screening of “Inner Senses.”
Known best in America for his work in gay-themed pictures,
Cheung’s performances helped to jumpstart the careers of
people like John Woo. Log on to www.asianfilm.org for more
information.

Kids Flicks
James Bridges Theater
Dec. 7, 2:00 p.m.

Every month, the UCLA Film & Television Archive screens a
pair of films for kids on a Sunday afternoon. This month, it has
chosen two Marx Brothers classics: “Duck Soup” and
“A Night at the Opera.” For anyone who’s familiar
with Groucho, Chico and Harpo, you’ll know that these
aren’t really kids movies, but who cares? Tickets are $8 at
the door.

“Big Fish”
Egyptian Theatre
Dec. 9, 7:30 p.m.

Director Tim Burton will be present to introduce a special
preview screening of his newest film, “Big Fish,” and
will also hold a discussion afterward. The mind that brought you
“Sleepy Hollow” seems to be returning to his
“Beetlejuice” and “Edward Scissorhands”
days, as “Big Fish” certainly seems to be bizarre
enough to hold over his dearest fans. The Q&A afterward will
also provide a rare opportunity to try and find out what makes this
guy tick, if you really want to know. Tickets are $8 with a student
ID ($9 without). Log on to www.egyptiantheatre.com for more
information.
