Declaration examination | Hector Alvarado, a
third-year international development studies student, views the
Declaration of Independence during an event held by Declare
Yourself, a national campaign encouraging students to register to
vote. The only traveling copy of the original 25 copies of the
Declaration came to UCLA on Thursday. The copy was unknowingly
purchased in 1989 by a woman at a flea market for $4. The woman
bought a poster with the intention of keeping the frame and when
she removed the poster, she found the Declaration hidden behind. It
was sold in a Sotheby’s auction in 2001 for $8.1 million.
