UCLA had two players advance to the Round of 16 of the main draw
of the Pac-10 men’s tennis championships, held Thursday
through Sunday at Libbey Park in Ojai.
Co-captain Chris Lam registered a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1
victory over USC’s Johan Berg in the first
round before going on to defeat Arizona State’s
Jonathan Kinsella, 6-3, 7-5, in his second
match.
Alberto Francis also advanced to the
quarterfinals with two wins Thursday.
Luben Pampoulov lost in the Round of 16 to
Oregon’s Manuel Kost, while Kris
Kwinta fell in the first round to Cal’s
Patrick Briaud, 6-4, 6-4.
Philipp Gruendler moved on to the quarterfinals
of the Pac-10 invitational draw after defeating Arizona’s
Tim Mullane, 6-1, 6-1, in the second round.
Aaron Yovan and Chris Surapol
also moved on to the quarterfinals. Jason Nguyen
won one match and lost his second.
WOMEN’S TENNIS: UCLA’s
Laura Gordon and Daniella Bercek
each won their first round match-ups in the Pac-10 women’s
championships in Ojai.
Gordon defeated USC’s Bernadette Bayani,
7-5, 7-6, while Bercek was a 7-5, 6-1 winner over
Washington’s Dinka Hadzic.
TRACK AND FIELD: High jumper Sheena
Gordon will be the only Bruin to head to the famed Penn
Relays this weekend.
The remainder of both the men’s and women’s track
teams will either compete at the UCSD Invitational or rest up for
next Saturday’s crosstown dual meet with USC.
