Softball, baseball take on alums

The UCLA softball team held its annual Alumnae Game this past
Sunday afternoon in Irvine. The white team knocked off the blue
team, 4-1, in a more laid-back atmosphere during the four-inning
game. Sophomore Lisa Dodd and freshman Anjelica Selden were the
starting pitchers for the white and blue teams, respectively. UCLA
will begin its season this Sunday with a doubleheader at UC Santa
Barbara.

BASEBALL: In its alumni game, UCLA’s
current squad defeated the former Bruins 7-0 on Saturday at Jackie
Robinson Stadium. Junior catcher Chris Denove had a two-run double
during a five-run fourth inning for the Bruins and sophomore
pitcher Hector Ambriz limited the alumni to one hit in five
innings. The Bruins kick off their 2005 season with a three-game
series starting this Friday at home against Cal Poly San Luis
Obispo.

RUGBY: UCLA avenged last year’s 72-3 loss
to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with an 18-12 victory over the
third-ranked Mustangs on Saturday. UCLA limited Cal Poly to two
tries and a conversion during the early season upset. With the win,
the Bruins put themselves in a position to compete for the national
championship later this year. The Mustangs were runners-up last
year.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL: Senior middle blocker
Paul Johnson was named the National Player of the Week by Sports
Imports/AVCA. He averaged 4.42 kills and 0.85 blocks per game
during UCLA’s recent wins over No. 3 Pepperdine and No. 13
USC. He recorded a total of 31 kills in the two matches. Johnson
also won the same award last February.
