Closure known in advance

The article about the Westwood Village Farmers’ Market
closing (“Workers given one last day,” News, Feb. 25)
surprised us since the Daily Bruin reported in October 2004 that
the market was making plans to move its operation. Aaron Shapiro,
director of the market, was aware for some time of the need to find
an alternative site and notify his vendors of the move ““ a
fact The Bruin has previously reported.

A more balanced account of the market might have been developed
if the story had quoted Westwood merchants about the market’s
effect on the Village or about Shapiro’s expulsion from the
Southland Farmers’ Market Association for “financial
irregularities.”
