SWF members meet with Chancellor Carnesale

Members of the Student Worker Front met with Chancellor Albert
Carnesale on Thursday to discuss the current state of service
workers in the University of California.

The meeting was scheduled after a rally calling for an increase
in wages and a contract settlement between the American Federation
of State, County and Municipal Employees and the UC. But between
the time of the rally and Thursday’s meeting, the problem was
resolved to a large extent as the unions and the UC reached an
agreement on a contract Wednesday.

Carnesale said the two parties were on the same side and that he
appreciated that the students recognized his support for both
unionized and non-unionized workers.

He said the students were asking him to continue his support for
the workers.

“These 20,000 staff enable us to do our thing,” he
said.

The chancellor was not directly involved in the negotiations,
though he said he and the other chancellors do voice their concerns
in private.
