This week, the Daily Bruin asked students what issues are most important to them in the mayoral election.

“I would probably say transportation because I don’t have a car, and I have to take the bus. I think we should have a subway system like China (does). The public transportation system here is not nearly as good.”

Fourth-year, psychology
“I think K-12 education is the most important issue because our school system is pretty bad in comparison to other countries. I am currently taking an adolescent development class, so it is a topic I find relevant.”
Derek Foster
First-year, computer science
“I would probably say transportation because it is most relevant to me at this time. Our current public transportation system is inconvenient and takes a really long time.”

Second-year, mechanical engineering
“I think K-12 education is the most important issue because I know our education system has a lot that we can improve on. We should make sure that kids have a positive experience in elementary school so that they are motivated to continue their education and attend college.”
Sevana Manukian
Second-year, molecular, cell and developmental biology
“The issue that is most visible to me is the parking system. I’ve gotten 3 parking tickets within the past few months. Parking is an issue in terms of both safety and accessibility. It may seem trivial, but right now for UCLA students this is a pertinent issue.”

“I mentor kids in elementary school and the quality of education could be a lot better. Classrooms are overcrowded and the standardized tests are not very effective. We should improve our school system because investing in kids is investing in our future.”
