Police report attempted theft of laptop from North Village apartment

A man tried to steal a UCLA student’s laptop from her North Village apartment early Friday morning, but left after the student confronted him, university police said.

The unknown man entered the student’s apartment on Kelton Avenue between Gayley Avenue and Ophir Drive at about 3:15 a.m. Friday while the student was in her bedroom, according to a UCPD statement. The apartment was unlocked, police added.

The student saw that the man was in the apartment and confronted him, police said. The man then let go of her laptop, turned and ran out of the front door.

The student told police she saw the man get into an older model BMW 7-series car with three or four other passengers. The car was last seen turning left onto Gayley Avenue.

The man was described as black, about 20 years old and wearing a plaid button-up shirt with gray or blue baggy pants. Police described the man’s clothes as “hipster-like.”

Two of the other passengers were both described as black men. One was tall and wearing a red shirt, and the other wore a white shirt and khaki pants.

No injuries were reported, and the case is still under investigation.

Police recommend that students keep their doors and windows locked and do not invite or allow any strangers into their rooms.

Anyone with information about either incident can call UCPD at (310) 825-9371.
