UCPD is investigating an alleged burglary by a man who posed as a delivery worker at Levering Terrace on Monday.

The suspect accessed the building through the call box system, according to a Clery Timely Warning crime alert sent at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. He carried a large blue parcel bag, collected multiple packages and then left with the stolen items, according to the alert.

A similar incident occurred at the same location Jan. 28.

The suspect was described as a Hispanic man between 30 and 40 years old, about 5 feet, 8 inches tall and weighing about 190 pounds, with light facial hair and a goatee. During a prior incident, he wore an Amazon-branded vest.

The crime was under investigation as of 10:30 a.m. Thursday, according to the alert.

Some of the stolen packages have been recovered, but several remain missing, said Jeffrey Chobanian, the captain of UCPD’s operations bureau, in a written statement.

The total loss is estimated to be less than $1,000, he added. The threshold for grand theft is $950, which carries a heftier penalty.

Police reviewed security footage from the building as part of the investigation, Chobanian said in the statement. He also advised residents to promptly pick up deliveries from shared mailroom spaces and to be attentive when accessing common package areas, noting that thefts have been occurring in those locations.

UCPD reminded community members in the alert to report inoperable locks and latches to maintenance personnel, ensure they close and lock their doors and windows, and avoid allowing unknown people to enter secured buildings or “tailgate” inside. UCPD also advised against leaving valuables unattended and urged people to immediately report suspicious behavior, vehicles or activity.

UCPD issues Clery Timely Warnings when crimes occurring on or near campus are determined to pose a serious or continuing threat to the campus community, in compliance with federal law.
