The sole candidate for the Undergraduate Students Association Council’s Academic Affairs commissioner pledged to connect students to academic resources at a debate Wednesday.

The USA Elections Board and the Daily Bruin co-hosted a series of debates between candidates in the upcoming USAC election. One candidate, Angela Ledesma-Grattarola, is running to be Academic Affairs commissioner.

Ledesma-Grattarola, a third-year political science, public affairs and sociology student, said in her platform that if elected, she will prioritize student retention, access and equity. She added that she wants to advocate for UCLA to label itself a sanctuary campus and support pre-existing career advancement programs.

Ledesma-Grattarola said becoming the Academic Affairs commissioner would be an opportunity for her to serve the campus and help it evolve. She added that she wants to help students access the resources offered by UCLA.

Ledesma-Grattarola also said she wants to prioritize reaching out to underrepresented communities. She added that she plans to meet with students in person to ensure they have academic support.

“It all starts with intentional outreach,” Ledesma-Grattarola said. “Being out there, being on the front lines, talking to students and ensuring that they’re not only passionate but they have their own grievances and are really okay with going before faculty and staff and putting in their position.”

Students can vote in the election on MyUCLA starting May 8 at 8 a.m. until May 15 at noon.
