The Los Angeles County Museum of Art has declared art is off the walls.
The first-ever Los Angeles Art Parade took place along Wilshire Boulevard’s Museum Row on June 20. The Art Parade was first conceptualized by art dealer Jeffrey Deitch to create a “living gallery” for Manhattan’s SoHo neighborhood in 2005. Deitch Projects’ parade, presented in collaboration with Paper Magazine, returned to New York City annually to mark the start of the city’s art season until 2008. Decades later, LACMA brought Deitch and the Art Parade to the West Coast to celebrate the opening weekend of its David Geffen Galleries. The galleries are named in honor of the philanthropist after whom the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, the Geffen Academy at UCLA and Westwood’s Geffen Playhouse are also named.
The new gallery is a two-decade construction project that crosses over Wilshire Boulevard. Jane and Terry Semel, who have also made significant donations to UCLA, are among the names recognized in the gallery. The opening festivities were funded in part by the East West Bank Foundation, which aims to support the arts through access, engagement and education.
