UCPD responded to an assault with a deadly weapon near the Chabad House early Friday morning.

The department received a report of an altercation on the 700 block of Gayley Avenue at around 2 a.m. Friday, said Richard Mejia, the director of emergency communications and information for the Office of Campus and Community Safety, in an emailed statement.

Officers located the victim, a UCLA student, and helped transport them to a local hospital for treatment, he added.

UCPD arrested a 30-year-old man with no affiliation to the university following an investigation for assault with a deadly weapon and false imprisonment, Mejia said in the statement. Mejia did not answer specific questions about what weapon was used or the suspect’s potential motive.

While the incident took place near the Chabad House, Rabbi Dovid Gurevich and Elisa Gurevich, co-directors of the Chabad House, said in an emailed statement that they were previously unaware of the event, and it did not affect members of the Chabad community, to their knowledge.

Mejia said in the statement that the incident is still under investigation.
