Democrat Rick Chavez Zbur was reelected to the California State Assembly District 51 seat Thursday.
Zbur, whose district includes UCLA and its surrounding communities, received 61.5% of the vote as of Thursday evening, according to the Associated Press. His platform includes combating heightened immigration enforcement activity, promoting reproductive rights and providing more employment opportunities, according to his campaign website.
Zbur was first elected to the State Assembly in 2022 and was appointed as the Democratic Caucus Chair in 2023. He was previously the executive director of Equality California – an LGBTQ+ advocacy organization – and the president of California Environmental Voters, a climate action advocacy group.
During his previous term, Zbur authored and passed legislation supporting renewable energy and building more housing near community colleges. Zbur helped secure $5 million to fund UCLA’s Center on Reproductive Health, Law, and Policy, his representative said in August.
Zbur was endorsed by Planned Parenthood Advocacy Project LA County Action Fund, United Farm Workers, Equality California and California Environmental Voters.
Colin Hernandez, a Democrat and Zbur’s opponent, received 38.5% of the vote. He campaigned on expanding universal childcare and healthcare and building more housing. Hernandez was endorsed by Los Angeles City Controller Kenneth Mejia and by UCLA’s chapter of Young Democratic Socialists of America.
“I’m proud of the work our campaign managed to do,” Hernandez said in an emailed statement. “Assembly District 51 still deserves a fighter who serves working people.”
Zbur did not immediately reply for comment on the results. The California State Assembly District 51 seat will be up for reelection in 2028.
