McHenry, a third-year ethnomusicology student and Ortaliza, a second-year pre-human biology and society student, had both been thinking independently about putting together a showcase of Asian-American and Pacific Islander artists. Under the direction of James Roberson, the students of the Music of African Americans Ensemble perform a diverse mix of gospel music. The class not only teaches the students the fundamentals of gospel music, but also about the contextual history behind spiritual music dating back to the 1600s with the enslavement of Africans.
