Fowler’s ‘Making Strange’ exhibit brings together artist’s projects

Artist Vivan Sundaram meshed together the names Lady Gaga and “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” by Shakira to create the fictional brand name “Gagawaka.” The Fowler Museum’s “Making Strange: Gagawaka + Postmortem” is a two-part exhibition by Delhi-based contemporary artist Sundaram running from April 19 through Sept. Grupo Folklórico de UCLA to perform annual cultural showcase

Swirling skirts in shades of green, purple, pink and yellow ripple in wavelike patterns as folklórico dancers spin in tight circles. Representing the coastal region of Veracruz, Mexico, some of the dancers practice dizzying spins and tap their heeled boots in time to the upbeat music on McClure Stage in Bruin Plaza, only pausing to catch their breath as the music continues wildly.
