Head injuries could cause serious mental illnesses by changing genes in the brain, UCLA researchers found in a recent study. The study found that people who have serious head injuries may develop the same genes associated with the onset of Alzheimer’s disease, post-traumatic stress disorder, Parkinson’s disease and other mental disorders. UCLA will help expand a middle school in South Los Angeles under an agreement signed with the Los Angeles Unified School District last month. The Graduate School of Education and Information Studies will partner with Horace Mann Middle School to add grade levels nine through 12, develop a revised curriculum and improve after-school programs, UCLA officials said in a press release.
