California bans legacy admissions at higher education institutions
A new law will soon ban legacy admissions across California universities. Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill in September banning all California higher education institutions from considering donor status or whether a candidate had a family member attend the institution as part of admissions decisions beginning in September 2025. AFSCME Local 3299 rallies together for 2-day strike against UC
This post was updated Feb. 17 at 5:30 p.m. Thousands of workers struck against the UC on Wednesday and Thursday. Members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3299 – which represents patient care, service and skilled craft workers – voted to authorize a strike with 99% support after alleging that the University bargained in bad faith during contract negotiations. California finalizes races in 10 state propositions from spending to healthcare

AIDS Healthcare Foundation hosts watch party in support of Proposition 33
Around 70 people gathered at a watch party in Hollywood on Nov. 5 to show support for Proposition 33, a proposal to expand rent control. Proposition 33, which was rejected by approximately 60% of voters according to the Los Angeles Times, would have repealed the Costa-Hawkins Rental Housing Act of 1995, enabling local governments to expand limits on rental rates for housing.
