UCLA activists work to expand access to rape test kit services

UCLA student activists and leaders are working to improve care for survivors of sexual violence by improving access to rape test kits. This fall, IGNITE at UCLA, a student organization dedicated to reproductive justice advocacy, started a petition calling on UCLA to offer free rape test kit services at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. Former UCLA gynecologist James Heaps found guilty of sexual misconduct

A jury found former UCLA gynecologist James Heaps guilty of sexual misconduct Thursday.  The trial began Aug. 9 after a grand jury indicted Heaps, a former faculty member at the David Geffen School of Medicine, on 21 counts of felony sexual assault in May 2021.  Heaps was found guilty on three counts of sexual battery and two counts of sexual penetration, according to NBC. UCLA administrators monitor students’ social media activity

UCLA has been using a service to monitor social media posts since 2018 without significant public notice. The university was one of at least 37 colleges and universities identified in a recent investigation by the Dallas Morning News into the use of Social Sentinel, a service schools can use to monitor students’ public social media accounts for potential threats to campus safety.
