UCLA appointed public health professor Vickie Mays to a new position to advise the Chancellor on issues affecting the Black community. Chancellor Gene Block announced Monday that Mays, a professor in the School of Public Health, will serve as the special advisor to the chancellor on Black life. Read more...

The undergraduate student government is recruiting campus organizations to join a board to advise the student government’s policies. The Congressional Advisory Board, which was formed over the summer, is made up of student groups from around campus, such as the Afrikan Student Union, Samahang Pilipino and the Transfer Leadership Coalition. A visiting UCLA researcher was charged with destroying evidence to obstruct an FBI investigation, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Friday. Guan Lei, a visiting researcher from China who studied mathematics, allegedly destroyed a computer hard drive while he was under an FBI investigation, according to an affidavit written by FBI special agent Timothy Hurt, who investigated Lei beginning in July. Budget cuts from the university have forced several campus programs that help marginalized communities at UCLA to restructure or dissolve after. Since February, UCLA has cut funding to a program that supports student activists and a program that provides tutoring to front-line workers. Read more...
