Uniqlo founder gives $31M to UCLA to fund study of Japanese humanities

Japan’s richest man donated $31 million to the study of Japanese humanities at UCLA on Oct. 3. Tadashi Yanai, the president of Japanese retail company Fast Retailing – the parent company of clothing company Uniqlo – committed the donation to the Yanai Initiative for Globalizing Japanese Humanities. UCLA accused an ecologist of harassment. She’s now suing for discrimination.

A prominent UCLA ecologist on involuntary leave filed a lawsuit against the University earlier this month, alleging wrongful suspension, harassment and racial discrimination. Ecology and evolutionary biology professor Priyanga Amarasekare joined UCLA in 2005, but she was suspended in July 2022 for a year with no pay by then-Chancellor Gene Block. Read more...
