The UCLA Queer Alliance and Won Together are hosting a rally and vigil today to inform students about the high nationwide levels of suicide in the LGBT community. Six students, ranging in age from 13 to 19, who had been identified with the LGBT community, committed suicide in September. "What happened to those boys was a tragedy," said Gatsby Miller, a fourth-year LGBT studies student and member of the LGBT Campus Resource Center. Read more...
The allure of exotic and foreign lands drew in a large crowd of students Tuesday during the 24th annual study abroad fair. Conducted by UCLA's International Education Office, the fair presented students with information on various programs offered by UCLA and outside sources for abroad curriculums. Sergio Broderick-Villa, associate director for study abroad at the International Education Office, said the fair is meant to expose the idea of studying abroad to those who may have never considered it. In fact, Broderick-Villa said it is those people who have never considered studying abroad that should begin to mull over the idea. In an effort to improve safety measures in science laboratories across campus, UCLA's Environment, Health and Safety office is conducting unannounced inspections throughout the year to ensure lab workers are wearing the required protective equipment and complying with a new safety policy. UCLA is growing not only in terms of population, but also in its socioeconomic diversity, according to estimated figures from the analysis of its 2010-2011 freshman class. Not only did UCLA admit and enroll more first-year students from low-income families, but early figures also showed very slight increases in the enrollment of underrepresented students. Read more...
