Some students are concerned about how their peers are handling the COVID-19 pandemic and think UCLA could do more to enforce COVID-19 guidelines. UCLA’s outline of student conduct and policies for COVID-19 gives regulations for large gatherings, and states that students can face academic consequences or exclusion from UCLA housing for violating UCLA’s policies. International student enrollment declined because of the COVID-19 pandemic and changes in government policy, UCLA faculty said. The enrollment rate of new international students decreased nationally by more than 40% from 2019 to 2020, according to data in the Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange. There are many resources students experiencing hunger and homelessness may not know about, according to UCLA student and community leaders at a panel Tuesday. The Bruin McKinney Vento Initiative supports the academic success of students experiencing homelessness by providing them with access to basic needs, 580 Cafe helps students find food resources in local communities during the pandemic, and Swipe Out Hunger collects residential Hall meal swipes and donates them to students. UCLA did not renew a contract for a teaching assistant, who now has to find another way to pay for his cancer treatments and tuition. Hughlin Boyd, a graduate student in the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies, received an email from UCLA the day before the start of the fall quarter, informing him that he was ineligible to work as a teaching assistant for the quarter.
