President Barack Obama announced Monday that UCLA will house a new manufacturing research center to increase manufacturing efficiency in the U.S. The UCLA center will be part of a national network of manufacturing institutes under the Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute, with locations in Texas, New York, Washington and North Carolina, according to a White House press release. Antibody supplier for UCLA to stop selling under USDA agreement
A major antibody supplier for UCLA agreed to stop selling products under an agreement with the United States Department of Agriculture. USDA fined Santa Cruz Biotechnology $3.5 million and revoked the company’s license to produce antibodies in the settlement agreement it released. Read more...

Student group pushes for divestment from fossil fuels within UC
A UCLA student group visited a University of California regent’s office Friday to deliver thank-you letters for his support for divestment from fossil fuel companies. About 15 students and alumni from Fossil Free UCLA, UC Berkeley and State University of New York campuses delivered letters to the office of Regent Richard Sherman, the next chair of the committee on investments for the UC Regents. UCLA medical centers prepare for End of Life Option Act
UCLA medical centers are training physicians and developing patient advocacy groups to prepare for an aid-in-dying law, which will go into effect June 9. The End of Life Option Act will permit doctors in California to prescribe self-administered, life-ending medication to patients who are terminally diagnosed to live for six months or fewer. UCLA research group wins $18,000 grant to install water capture system
Five students received an $18,000 grant in early May to install a storm water capture system on the UCLA campus. Students on UCLA’s Sustainability Action Research’s Resilience Team plan to build a 200,000-gallon capture system that could save 1.22 million gallons of water per year, said Austin Park, a team leader and third-year civil and environmental engineering student.
