UCLA Grand Challenge reveals plan for environmental sustainability

The UCLA Sustainable LA Grand Challenge project released a report Wednesday detailing its research plan to make Los Angeles more environmentally sustainable by 2050. The five-year plan outlines goals such as powering Los Angeles County entirely with renewable energy, switching to locally-sourced water supplies and increasing native biodiversity and ecosystem health. UCLA professor Patrick Harran loses nomination as AAAS fellow

The American Association for the Advancement of Science, or AAAS, voted Tuesday to rescind UCLA professor Patrick Harran’s nomination to be a fellow. The association rescinded his nomination after learning the Los Angeles District Attorney filed felony charges in 2011 against Harran, a chemistry and biochemistry professor, for labor code violations that led to the death of one of his lab technicians. 3D4E plans to have prosthetic hand ready to hit the court this spring

3-D printers can precisely stack thin layers of plastic to create salt shakers, whistles and sculptures of Pikachu. By next quarter, UCLA students hope to print several parts that will combine to make a prosthetic hand. Read more...
