UCLA’s new space medicine fellowship program welcomes first inaugural fellow

UCLA launched its newest space medicine fellowship to train flight surgeons for future expeditions into space. UCLA will run the program alongside SpaceX, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the California Institute of Technology, letting fellows continue practicing emergency medicine at UCLA and gain expertise in space and biomedical engineering. Researchers examine effect of photographs on caring about biodiversity, charity

Researchers found that photographs can motivate people to care more about biodiversity and donate to environmental charities. In a study published Feb. 3, researchers from UCLA, Johns Hopkins University, Brown University, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and UC Santa Barbara found that the costs of declining biodiversity can be hard for most people to conceive, and as a result, investigated ways that could make them more tangible. LA County announces end to indoor mask requirement for fully vaccinated individuals

This post was updated Feb. 24 at 5:32 p.m. Los Angeles County will lift its indoor mask mandate in places requiring vaccine verification beginning Friday.  Based on declining COVID-19 cases and test positivity rates, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health announced in a press release Wednesday that fully vaccinated individuals will no longer be required to wear masks indoors, provided businesses verify their vaccination status. UCLA faculty help develop list of ethical principles for intracranial research

UCLA ethicists and neuroscientists recently collaborated with other researchers across the country to create a list of principles for ethical invasive brain research. Intracranial research uses invasive techniques inside the skull in order to answer fundamental questions about the brain and help provide treatments to patients with brain disorders that are untreatable with traditional methods, experts said. UCLA medical school faculty allege racially biased practices in psychiatry department

Faculty of color in the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences said they experienced and observed racial discrimination in various instances, including being passed over for promotions, ignored in decision-making and discouraged in efforts to hire more faculty of color.
