Travis Fife: Students should be able to define own college experience
There are times I think people over 40 miss college more than I enjoy being in it. Almost every conversation I’ve had with a family member about school goes like this: They get really excited that I’m at UCLA, tell me an anecdote about their undergraduate experience and then give me some general piece of advice like “work hard and it’ll make your life a hell of a lot easier after graduation.” These conversations tend to feature empty cliches about what you can expect out of a university like, “College is the time of your life” or “College is where you find yourself.” Beneath the cliche, though, lies an assumption about what you should be looking for when you arrive at a university. Submission: Divestment ineffective for combating climate change
On Sept. 15, the Daily Bruin published an editorial claiming that divestment is “about furthering a moral goal” and made a populist argument, presented without evidence, that the University of California investment committee is bending to powerful outside interests. Read more...

Editorial: UC should divest from fossil fuels, commit to sustainability
Divestment at the University of California has a greater meaning than whatever practical effects can be achieved by its implementation. Fundamentally, it’s about furthering a moral goal that is more important in the long term than immediate donations or investment returns. Read more...

Submission: Lobbyists, politicians must not meddle in campus debates
Earlier this year, UCLA students asked student government members not to take lobbying trips hosted by bigoted and discriminatory groups. In a strange intervention into campus politics, this summer Los Angeles City Council member Bob Blumenfield proposed a resolution denouncing this pledge. At a time when we are flooded with other problems, it is curious that Blumenfield has asked the City Council to spend its energy meddling in what appears to be a settled issue. Read more...

Submission: UC cannot legally give undocumented students state benefits
On Aug. 26, Judicial Watch took a step in defense of taxpayer rights by filing a lawsuit against the University of California Board of Regents. The lawsuit, filed on behalf of former California Senate candidate Earl De Vries, alleges that the UC Board of Regents is currently violating federal law by granting in-state tuition and state-funded public benefits to undocumented immigrants.
