BERKELEY – Alexander Hoogmartens seemed far from frazzled when he dropped his second set Saturday. After securing the first set against California’s Timofey Stepanov 7-6 (7), the Bruin veteran succumbed to an early deficit in the second stanza, after which he opted to take his foot off the gas – accepting the 6-1 steamroll – and conserve energy for the final set.
