Coach Mick Cronin said he had concerns about a confidence problem in his team after his team’s recent loss to Maryland. The coach added that because it lacked a “go-to guy,” UCLA had dug itself into a four-game losing streak. But in the Bruins’ first Pac-12 game of the season, sophomore forward/center Adem Bona – who contributed 13 points, eight rebounds and three blocks while staying out of foul trouble – sought to become that guy. Pauley Pavilion is familiar with left-handed sharpshooters. Former guard Jules Bernard boasted a career shooting percentage of 43% in 130 games across four seasons with the Bruins. Yet Friday, the southpaw dominating the floor was wearing red and white – not blue and gold. Torching UCLA men’s basketball (5-6, 0-0 Pac-12) for 37 points – a career high and 14 more than Bernard’s best – guard Jahmir Young led Maryland (8-4, 1-1 Big Ten) to a 69-60 victory, handing the Bruins their second consecutive home loss for the first time in nearly four years and extending their losing streak to four. “Last year, he probably had six (points) against us,” coach Mick Cronin said. The Rainbow Wahine’s tallest player stood three inches shorter than the Bruins’ tallest. When sophomore center Lauren Betts – standing at 6-foot-7 – grabbed the ball in the paint late in the second frame, three Rainbow Wahine players surrounded her.
