National championship comes at the right time for UCLA

The UCLA men’s soccer team has won the national championship, and I can’t think of a better panacea for the athletic department’s current ailments. Bruin big men earn their wings against Pilots

When the Bruins limped their way to an 0-2 start, Steve Lavin talked at great lengths about how much UCLA missed Andre Patterson. The sophomore forward, who stands 6 feet, 7 inches but plays like he’s six inches taller, had to watch from the stands of Pauley Pavilion for a month while he waited for grades at Santa Monica College to render him eligible to play for the Bruins once again. Patterson should be back at UCLA after earning sufficient marks

In an interview session Sunday, sophomore forward Andre Patterson said that his grades should be good enough to get back into UCLA. After earning two A’s and a C at Santa Monica City College, Patterson will give his grades to Mike Casillas, the director of Student-Athlete Counseling, tomorrow in order to regain a roster spot on the team. Lisa Willis has loved UCLA ever since she first picked up a basketball in the third grade. Although two of her prep teammates at Narbonne High School, juniors Jessica Cheeks and Ebony Hoffman, currently start for the USC women’s basketball team, Willis chose to come to Westwood. Read more...
