Gov. Brown submits proposal to increase UC Scout budget by $4M
Gov. Jerry Brown proposed $4 million to expand a program that allows high school students to take UC-required courses and Advanced Placement courses online. The funding, proposed in Brown’s May budget revision, would update and add new courses to UC Scout, a program that offers A-G and AP courses, according to the budget revision. Read more...

Jerry Kang, Heather Rosen to speak on cultural discrimination panel
The vice chancellor for equity, diversity and inclusion and the outgoing USAC president will be speaking on a cultural discussion panel Wednesday. Jerry Kang and Heather Rosen will participate in the event, titled “Challenges and Opportunities facing Jewish and Asian American College Students.” It will be hosted by the Anti-Defamation League, an organization that aims to prevent bigotry and discrimination, according to their mission statement. UCLA attains fair-trade university status after four-year endeavor

UCLA research group wins $18,000 grant to install water capture system
Five students received an $18,000 grant in early May to install a storm water capture system on the UCLA campus. Students on UCLA’s Sustainability Action Research’s Resilience Team plan to build a 200,000-gallon capture system that could save 1.22 million gallons of water per year, said Austin Park, a team leader and third-year civil and environmental engineering student. UCLA student teaches high schoolers hip-hop to connect with culture
Sandra Parra said UCLA’s hip-hop community gave her a sense of belonging and power when she moved to Los Angeles as a freshman. Because hip-hop dance helped her identify with her culture during her first few months at UCLA, Parra, a fourth-year dance student, decided to help other students do the same in high school.
