UCLA Blood and Platelet Center hopes to draw more donations

Officials at the UCLA Blood and Platelet Center have seen fewer donations than usual this quarter. There were 24 fewer donors at the center’s Ackerman location in the first week of winter quarter compared to this time last year, said Faye Cortez, community liaison for the center. Read more...

Task force addresses colleges’ sexual assault policies

President Barack Obama announced a new task force Wednesday to help combat the issue of sexual assault and rape on college campuses. The advisory task force, which will be headed by the Office of the Vice President and the White House Council on Women and Girls, will recommend policy changes in the next 90 days to improve enforcement of federal laws concerning sexual assault and rape at universities and other higher education institutions, according to a presidential memorandum. Academic student workers and graduate student researchers represented by the United Auto Workers union recently ended a nearly six-week strike in which they called for better working conditions and equitable wages. The contract stipulates pay increases for all workers – for some, pay increases of up to 80% – as well as anti-harassment policies and increased childcare support. However, the negotiations have struck controversy among some UAW members dissatisfied with the results of the contract. What are your thoughts on this issue? Only the voices of the bargaining team were heard during the negotiation process – the contract is not all-encompassing of student workers and should not have been ratified. The mediation resulted in a realistic contract for academic workers at this time. The agreed-upon result generally covered what the strikers were asking for. I have feelings about this that are not described in the options above. The contract is neither good nor bad and/or this issue does not directly affect me as a student.
