Turtles overpopulate garden

Invasive red-eared slider turtles make their home in UCLA’s Botanical Garden

June 3, 2010 – UCLA's Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden on South Campus doesn't just display plants from around the world – it also hosts a colony of red-eared slider turtles, a species native to the American south, but not to California. Baby turtles are kept in holding tanks until they are 5 inches in diameter. Then they are released into the stream in the Mildred E. Mathias Botanical Garden.
