Study finds patterns in health disparity across different genetic ancestry groups

UCLA researchers used genetic data from people in Los Angeles to identify different groups’ disease risk and better understand health disparities. In the study published in July, the researchers used data collected as part of the UCLA ATLAS Community Health Initiative – including medical info from patients across LA – to see whether they could understand why certain communities might be more likely to receive certain diagnoses or seek hospital care, said Noah Zaitlen, the paper’s corresponding author. Community remembers Amy Lohmann for her service to students, patients

Amy Lohmann, a continuing lecturer at the UCLA School of Nursing, died Aug. 14 from breast cancer. She was 46 years old. Lohmann joined the school in 2012 after receiving her master’s degree in nursing from UCLA in 2005. Read more...

Research team with UCLA associate professor, ASU faculty examines shade deserts

A team of researchers including a UCLA associate professor has called for increased shade in low-income urban areas. In a July commentary published in Nature by UCLA associate professor Kelly Turner and two Arizona State University faculty members, the authors discuss the phenomenon of shade deserts – areas with little to no protection from sun exposure and heat that tend to be concentrated in low-income neighborhoods. UCLA students awarded Obama-Chesky Scholarship for Public Service

This post was updated Sept. 4 at 10:48 p.m. Two UCLA students earned a scholarship for excellence in public service and leadership. The Obama-Chesky Scholarship for Public Service, also called the Voyager Scholarship, was founded by former President Barack Obama’s family and Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky to support third-year college students who demonstrate exceptional intellectual curiosity and commitment toward careers in public service, according to the scholarship’s website. University announces new GPA requirement for Dean’s Honors

Students will now need to receive at least a 3.915 grade-point average to earn Dean’s Honors for a quarter, the university announced Friday. The GPA criteria for Dean’s Honors is subject to change every academic year, according to the UCLA Catalog website. Read more...
