UCLA researchers found that urban birds share common characteristics that may help them adapt to urban environments. The study, which was published May 8, found that birds in urban areas tend to be associated with certain traits such as smaller body sizes, more generalized diets and a larger number of eggs laid, said Morgan Tingley, a co-author of the study and an associate professor of ecology and evolutionary biology. One of Luke Mariak’s favorite memories is of a Nike shoe on UCLA’s Intramural Field aiming toward a soccer ball. The shoe, however, was not his own — it was that of Advanced Robotic Technology for Enhanced Mobility and Improved Stability, or ARTEMIS, a soccer-playing robot built by researchers alongside Dennis Hong, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering. UCLA’s Center for the Art of Performance appointed Edgar Miramontes as its executive and artistic director Thursday. He will start the role in August. Miramontes, a 2002 UCLA alumnus who has worked in the arts for more than 18 years, currently serves as the deputy executive director and curator at the Roy and Edna Disney CalArts Theater – which is the California Institute of the Art’s downtown performance center – according to the press release announcing his appointment.
