Gov. Gavin Newsom approved an act to ban the use of cell phones in K-12 schools in September 2024. Assembly Bill 3216 – also known as the Phone-Free School Act – mandates that every school district, charter school or county office of education at the K-12 level develop a rule that will prohibit or limit student use of cellphones when at school or under the supervision of an employee of the school district by July 2026. The Undergraduate Students Association Council unanimously passed a resolution Nov. 19 opposing a tuition hike for nonresident students. The UC Board of Regents voted Nov. 14 to approve an item recommending increased tuition for nonresident students by $3,402. Read more...

On Jan. 2, four days before classes began for winter quarter, a sign outside of Rubio’s in Ackerman Union stated “Rubio’s is closed indefinitely” and advised students to go to Taco Bell Express – which is located one floor below – instead. School of Theater, Film and Television Dean Brian Kite will be UCLA’s next dean and vice provost of graduate education.
