AFSCME announces May 16 strike in protest of labor outsourcing

University of California service workers will hold a systemwide strike May 16 in response to the University’s alleged illegal outsourcing of labor. The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3299, the UC’s largest employee union, announced Monday it will strike May 16 at the UC’s 10 campuses and five medical centers. Professor elected to National Academy of Sciences for research in parasite biology

A UCLA professor was elected to the National Academy of Sciences, a nonprofit organization composed of the nation’s leading researchers in science. Patricia Johnson, a professor of microbiology, immunology and molecular genetics, was one of 100 new members inducted into the National Academy of Sciences on April 30, according to the Academy website. Graduate students volunteer to teach local girl scouts about topics in STEM

Activist Sylvia Mendez speaks at club conference about Latina empowerment

A presidential medal of freedom honoree said Latinos should be recognized for their efforts to end segregation at a conference Saturday. Sylvia Mendez spoke at Hermanas Unidas de UCLA’s Health and Education Conference, a yearly community service project that invites Latina high school girls from Southern California to tour the UCLA campus and take part in workshops on mental health, women empowerment and academics. NWWNC has two weeks to approve grants for local organizations before election

North Westwood organizations have less than two weeks left to potentially receive a neighborhood purpose grant from the current council. Neighborhood purpose grants, which are grants given by neighborhood councils to benefit community organizations, can be issued in amounts up to $5,000 to eligible organizations, such as approved nonprofit organizations and public schools that lie within the boundaries of their respective councils. AFSCME Local 3299 claims UC illegally refused to bargain over outsourcing

A University of California labor union filed charges against the UC alleging the University is illegally outsourcing jobs. American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3299, the UC’s largest employee union, filed three unfair labor practice charges with the California Public Employment Relations Board on April 23 and 29 claiming the UC illegally sought out and entered into agreements with private contractors.
