Supreme Court rules against nonunion member fees in Janus v. AFSCME decision

The Supreme Court decreased labor unions’ power by ruling against nonmember fees Wednesday morning. In a 5-4 decision along party lines, the conservative-leaning court decided that unions can no longer charge fair share fees to those who choose not to join. Read more...

UC student advisory board looks to address lapses in sexual violence policies

A new University of California advisory board is addressing shortcomings relating to sexual violence across UC campuses. The Title IX Student Advisory Board, which was created in January, consists of one undergraduate and one graduate representative from each UC campus, except UC San Francisco, which has one graduate representative. UCLA students, incarcerated individuals discuss social justice in joint classes

When she was 11 years old, Rosie Rios mobilized members of her community to protest the bulldozing of her neighborhood. Rios’ passion for advocacy manifests itself in her work as the administrative director for the UCLA Prison Education Program, where she engages incarcerated individuals and UCLA students in discussions about art, social justice and advocacy. Westwood Neighborhood Council recap – June 13

This post was updated June 25 at 3:47 p.m. Comments by public officials Gibson Nyambura, a representative of the Department of Neighborhood Empowerment, said the Board of Neighborhood Commissioners will decide at a meeting in August whether jurisdiction of the business district in Westwood Village will fall under the Westwood Neighborhood Council or the new North Westwood Neighborhood Council, or be shared between the two councils.
