UCLA scholars criticize FCC’s proposal to repeal net neutrality rules

Computer science experts said UCLA students may experience an increase in internet costs if a government agency votes to repeal net neutrality rules next month. Ajit Pai, the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, proposed a plan last week to lessen government control over the internet by removing the commission’s net neutrality rules. Student volunteers in the Renewable Energy Association at UCLA separated piles of approximately 300 bags of trash into bins sorted for liquids, landfill, recyclables and compost at Wilson Plaza on Thursday for an event called “Waste Audit.” Claire Buzzelli, the club’s biofuels project co-lead and a third-year chemical engineering student, said the campus needs data on the various types of trash to create proposals to reach its goal of having zero waste by 2020. YRL librarian dies at 44, remembered for kindness, inquisitiveness

Oliver Mattheussens, a UCLA library assistant at the Charles E. Young Research Library, was an expert on European cultures and languages. Mattheussens, who worked in YRL since 2006, died of brain cancer at the age of 44 last week. Read more...

New operator looks to expand, diversify Westwood farmers market

A new operator for the Westwood Village Farmers Market has been working to diversify vendors, survey customer preference and ensure compliance. The Westwood Village Improvement Association, which oversees the market, replaced the former operator, Bautista Community Events, with Farmer Mark in June. Read more...
