Organization gives medical center ‘A’ grade for patient safety

The Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center achieved its highest patient safety grade in recent years, according to a nationwide report on hospitals released last week. The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit organization that advocates for hospital performance transparency, gave the medical center an “A” safety grade for fall 2017 after reviewing its data on medical errors, injuries, accidents and infections. UCLA engineering school opens resource center for transfer students

The UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Sciences opened a new resource center for its transfer students Friday. The Engineering Transfer Center, located in Boelter Hall 6288, held a grand opening for students to see the new space and meet the center’s staff. Read more...

Liberal student organization campaigns for out-of-state candidates

Students in a grassroots political organization spent three hours calling voters in Virginia to support a local Democratic candidate at a phone banking event Friday. About 12 students in Bruins Elect met in a Westwood apartment to call residents in the Virginia House of Delegates’ 68th district to garner support for Dawn Adams, a candidate in Tuesday’s election. LA Mayor Garcetti, other officials speak about housing issues at event

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said Friday he thinks the city should work with developers to construct more affordable housing as its population increases. Garcetti spoke at the 2017 Mayoral Housing, Transportation and Jobs Summit, where about 100 business owners and representatives listened to Los Angeles officials and business owners talk about ways to create more affordable housing for the city’s growing population and implement more efficient transit systems throughout LA. Lawyers and activists discuss prison health care at law school event

Legal experts and activists said at a symposium Friday they think the United States needs to improve its prisons’ mental and physical health care systems. About a dozen lawyers, academics and activists attended UCLA Law Review Discourse’s first symposium about health care issues in prisons and the long-term physical and psychological consequences of prison life on formerly incarcerated people.
